South Africa

What you read below in the "JOURNAL" was my as-written,unedited version of impressions, experiences and thoughts from my time in Lesotho. Now we are in South Africa and have access through the Oakford Dominicans' computers to update a bit. We had a tour of Soweto - to be written about and thought about a lot! Amazing and inspiring and more.
We had our Safari experience from Friday evening through Sunday morning. When I get to Montreal I hope to be able to post a few pictures to share along with a story or two. Magnficent only begins to describe that experience!
On Monday evening we will leave South Africa, travel through Frankfurt to Kennedy airport, change airlines and fly to Montreal. Sounds like a marathon of travel, but it's the only way to get home! I hope to use some of that plane time to just think about and review all that has taken place during the past two and a half weeks.

One story for now. We went on a night ride during our safari weekend. At dusk we left our camp and saw nothing for a while until we came upon an elephant just off the road. We learned that he was "in an aroused state" as our guide told us - and that's something to be reckoned with. The guide knew where to park the safari vehicle and how to use the sound of revving up the motor to keep the elephant at bay. That did not stop said elephant from moving directly toward me - I had time to snap a photo and we got out of Dodge! NEVER thought I'd see such a magestic animal at such close range. Thrilling and just a wee bit scary...and, of course, fodder for lots of teasing!
More when I can get to a wireless state of being.
